Australian operatic soprano Joan Sutherland (1926 – 2010) was widely regarded as one of the greatest opera singers of the 20th century and was specially noted for her ability to meet the demands of the bel canto repertoire. This led to the revival of many long neglected operas, which provided a showcase for her spectacular vocal skills.
