Jussi Björling (1911 - 1960) Swedish tenor and one of the leading operatic singers of the 20th century . Björling was admired for the musicianship of his performances, particularly in the Italian and French repertory. His career spanned 40 years, starting as a boy soprano in the Bjorling Male Voice Quartet and as a teenager he gained entrance to the Stockholm Royal Opera School and was singing leading roles from the age of 20. From the mid 1930s he was in demand all over Europe and he became immensely popular in the United States and was a great favourite at The Met.
