EUGENE ORMANDY

 

Eugene Ormandy (1899–1985) was a Hungarian-American conductor best known for his long tenure as music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra, which he led from 1936 to 1980. Ormandy was particularly admired for his interpretations of Romantic and early 20th-century repertoire, including works by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Strauss, and he made numerous landmark recordings that helped define the orchestra’s international reputation.
