MOZART: PIANO CONCERTOS    MALCOLM BILSON / ENGLISH BAROQUE SOLOISTS / JOHN ELIOT GARDINER

DG ARCHIV  GERMANY 1984 - 1989     8 LP  +  2 CD        NM / EX+

This must be the point at which record companies fell out of love with the record collector. Since its inception in 1948, generations of music lovers have welcomed and supported the LP and this mutually beneficial 70 year relationship has seen the industry grown very profitable and collectors given access to a great deal of wonderful music.

How strange then that ARCHIV should abandon the LP collector three quarters of the way through a complete cycle of great works. The first issue in the series was published in 1984 and LP collectors  rallied in sufficient numbers to convince the manufacturer that it might be worth recording the whole cycle. Accordingly, for the next three years the new issues were duly published and duly purchased by collectors now convinced that the whole cycle would be available on LP.

Sadly, the last four concertos were issued on CD only. ARCHIV are not the only record company to let LP collectors down in this way, but the decision is as incomprehensible as it is inconsiderate and does them no credit at all.

So my apologies for not being able to offer collectors the whole cycle on LP. Hopefully you all possess a CD player.

Shipping & Returns

Should a record prove unsatisfactory a full refund will be made, but we ask that buyers notify us within 10 days of receipt of the item. In some cases we may request that the item be returned to us for examination prior to the issuing of a refund. If we are convinced that the item returned is identical to the one sent, and that any faults match those described by the customer, a full refund will be issued as well as the cost of returning the item to us.

We do our very best to grade records honestly and accurately, but we do occasionally make mistakes, and our priority is to rectify problems to the satisfaction of the customer. With a stock of over 30,000 LPs we do not claim to have auditioned every record in our catalogue, but every LP is examined carefully during the listing process and any suspicious looking marks are auditioned before grading.

GRADING

The classical record is graded first and the sleeve or box second. A near mint LP in a fine sleeve would be listed NM / EX+

NM near mint. Looks almost new. No blemishes or marks and few, if any, spindle marks on the labels. Sleeve will be similarly unmarked, with no creases or tears and no handwriting.

EX+ excellent plus. Perhaps a few light marks or scuffs that do not affect sound and very few spindle marks on the labels. Sleeve may show more signs of wear, with perhaps the odd crease or ringwear and maybe a handwritten name or number on the back, but still in fine condition.

EX excellent. Shows more signs of use, with perhaps a scuff or two or light hairlines, none of which will produce unwanted and intrusive sounds. Any dubious looking marks will be auditioned prior to listing. Sleeves may be a little more worn, with perhaps a crease or two and may have either a number or handwriting by the previous owner or original retailer.

VG+ very good plus. Records in this category are of the rarer variety and are included because of their scarcity and their potential desirability to collectors. Even so, we list very few items in this category. Heavier marks and scuffs, a few of which may sound on playback. Generally more worn appearance, with sleeve perhaps rather grubby and with small tears or creases.
