These little known composers were both pupils of Beethoven and both enjoyed a measure of fame in their own lifetime, but have since joined the ranks of the neglected. Even so, Beethoven displayed his confidence in them both, by allowing Ries (1784-1838) to perform the first performance of his third piano concerto, and Czerny (1791-1857) had the honour of playing the first Viennese performance of the 'Emperor'
