The advent of digital recording and its adoption by Decca in 1978 evidently put the company in a quandary. Having already recorded Lupu's interpretations of Concerto no. 3 in 1971 with Lawrence Foster and the LSO and no. 4 in 1977 with Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic, it was decided not to re-record Concerto no. 4 digitally, but to replace Lupu's earlier recording of no. 3 with this new Tel Aviv digital version.
