Despite being allocated catalogue number LSC 2185, this recording was never issued in the USA. Boult's readings of both works stand comparison with all contenders in terms of sound, and the performances are memorable, with the Rimsky piece arguably the best on disc. Audiophiles familiar with Boult's return to Russian repertoire with the LPO in 1975 on the superb EMI LP of Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov (ASD 3093) will not be surprised by the elan and drama of these performances, that are quite at odds with Boult's unjust reputation as staid and uninspiring.
